Are Rolex watches overrated?

Question by kojak0527: Are Rolex watches overrated?
I bought a Citizen Skyhawk titanium I like better than just about any Rolex I saw, and it’s a fraction of the price.

Just wondering what the general opinion is. Is it just the name?

Not all can get away with sporting the Rolex watch. Others can easily pull it off.

yes, it is just a status symbol among certain groups, the best watch i ever had was a timex i found in the driveway, except for the crack from being run over that thing lasted for five years, which is a record for me. The last one i bought was a $70 watch, I dont even know what brand it was it only lasted about two months.

All I know is I”ve never looked at the brand of a guys watch. It either looks good or it doesn’t.

I think they are nice. My husband has one, and it is a big thing for a guy I guess. I don’t want one, but I don’t think he could live without his!

Are Rolex watches overrated? of course….it’s just another case of consumer stupidity in paying for a name rather than comparative quality

It’s a status symbol. As such I think they’re overrated from the perspective of usefulness. As a fashion symbol it’s the watch by which all fashion watches are measured. I’d never wear one…I’m much too practical (or unsophisticated…or “monetarily challenged”) for that…they don’t appeal to me.

I like Rolex . . . not really anything about the actual watch, just reminds me of the men in my family (Dad, Grandpa, brother) because they all wear them (so does my mom) I guess it’s a sentimental thing

yeah, i think it’s just the name. like a Mont-Blanc pen. (did i spell that right?) it still writes if it’s a PaperMate. Timex still tells time. only shallow women look to see if a guy has a Rolex on. Hey, maybe that’s what they want.

Well I do think that Rolex is so overrated. Plus if you have something like that you know it will most likely get lost or stolen. The most expensive things that you get will always get lost or stolen. I had a pair of expensive sunglasses and they got stolen at work one day. And yes it is just the name that people want.

Yeah, they’re overrated. And it’s about time. Of course, you gotta watch it sometimes — or else you’ll get all wound up. Then again, ya gotta hand it to the advertisers–they can sell even SECOND-HAND ones, in no time flat.

    Rolex…shmolex….

    What exactly is the point
    of spending the same amount
on a watch as you would
    on a house payment?

    A watch is a watch is a watch…

sometimes it depends on who’s wearing it -when you look at it, I bet it will tell you same thing that a Timex will tho

YES NOT TO MANY PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THEM ANYMORE LIKE THEY USED TO. I USED TO HEAR ABOUT A ROLEX EVERYTIME I TURNED THE CHANNEL.

I do not see the justification in all the hype with Rolex watches. I have had my fair share of some high dollar watches, but I am happier with the lower end ones. I have a Timex Indiglo watch that is perfect for my duty watch. This is the only watch I have ever owned that I’ve never had to change the battery in, its eight years old. My casual watch is a Citizens and it does the job just fine too. And as long as I don’t overwind my old 1950′s Bulova with real ruby jewel works, it keeps excellent time and is perfect for formal occassions.

That’s definitely TRUE – Rolex is over-rated… most of my friends also say that…

Just the name. A status symbol. People care too much about what other people think of them.

Yes, Rolex means status so everyone wants them.
